Freezer Repair
Frost build-up, dead defrost cycles and temperature drift on Sub-Zero freezer columns, drawers and built-in sections.
What people ring about
- Slab of ice across the rear evaporator panel
- Freezer holding in the teens instead of at zero
- Drawer or door that will not close because of ice on the track
In what order
What it usually turns out to be
Freezer complaints come in three shapes: a slab of ice growing across the rear panel, a compartment holding in the teens instead of at zero, and a drawer that will not close because ice has built on the track. All three are the defrost side of the system telling you something, and none of them need a new unit.
-
Whether defrost is running at all
A dead heater, an open thermostat or a control that has stopped calling for defrost all end at the same place: frost that never melts and an evaporator that slowly stops moving air. We read the circuit rather than swapping parts at it.
-
The drain, right through
Meltwater has to leave the cabinet. When the drain line freezes solid, defrost water runs back into the compartment and refreezes as the slab you can see, or reappears as ice on a drawer track. Clearing the line properly is half the repair.
-
Drawer and door seals
A split drawer gasket pulls room air in continuously, and in July that air arrives loaded with moisture from evaporative cooling and irrigation. The frost comes straight back a week after you scrape the panel clear, which is the giveaway.
-
Where the unit lives
Freezer columns in laundry rooms, garages and butler pantries run against ambient temperatures the design never assumed. We measure the air the condenser is actually breathing before deciding whether the machine or the room is the problem.
What it costs
What freezer repair costs here
Each course below covers parts and labour on Sub-Zero equipment. Where a job lands inside its range comes down to the part and how far back in the cabinet it sits — measured on site, not guessed at over the phone.
The service call
Flat $89 service call covering the visit and full diagnosis, credited against the repair once you approve it.
- Door gasket or seal replacement
- $270–$620
- Evaporator or condenser fan motor
- $300–$660
- Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor
- $280–$600
- Ice maker, water valve or supply line
- $270–$770
- Electronic control board
- $440–$870
- Compressor or sealed-system repair
- $1,450–$3,120
You are given the band on the phone and the firm figure on site, once the fault is confirmed with the unit open. Nothing is dismantled and no part is ordered until you have agreed that number, and the $89 you paid for the visit comes off it in full the moment you approve the work.
For scale $11,980–$21,190 is what a comparable built-in replacement, before installation and cabinetry work comes to. That is the arithmetic behind repairing a cabinet that is otherwise sound.

Everything in the freezer went soft over a weekend while the display still read zero. The temperature probe was lying. He proved that with his own meter before ordering anything. Star off for the phone tag.
Waylon C. · Biltmore
Our built-in backs onto a wall that bakes every afternoon, and the freezer had been running in the teens for weeks. Strangled condenser airflow plus a cracked fan blade. He showed me the numbers before and after.
Guadalupe H. · Ahwatukee
Hottest week of July and the freezer half quit while the refrigerator side carried on fine. Airflow at the vent panel was choked with dust and the door heater was stuck on. Both handled in one visit.
