What it usually turns out to be

A fresh-food side drifting up while the freezer still holds hard is rarely a dead compressor. On built-in and integrated units it is usually air: the condenser cannot reject heat, the evaporator is iced over, or the fan moving air between the two sections has stopped. That is also why the same unit behaves differently in June than it did in February.

The condenser, and the fan behind it

Fins matted with dust and pet hair are the single most common thing we pull a grille off to find here, and a condenser fan turning slowly does the same damage more quietly. Both show up as a compressor that never cycles off once the afternoon warms up.
Evaporator ice and the defrost circuit

If the rear panel behind the drawers is iced, the fresh-food side is being starved of cold air rather than failing to make it. We read the defrost heater, the thermistors and the drain before anyone talks about a sealed system.
Seals, hinges and the vacuum pull

A door that no longer draws itself shut is pulling desert air into the cabinet every minute of the day. Gaskets go soft in this heat, and one soft corner is enough to keep a unit running flat out and sweating around the frame.
